Why Cellulose Fibers Require Pre-Treatment

Unlike protein fibers (such as wool or silk), cellulose fibers derived from plants (like cotton and linen) have a slick molecular structure that naturally repels plant dyes. If you attempt to dye raw cotton, the color will simply wash out down the drain.

To achieve rich, uniform, and wash-fast results, you must follow a two-stage pre-treatment process: Tannining followed by Mordanting. This classic artisan sequence ensures that the color molecules from your botanical bark permanently lock into the heart of the cotton fiber.

1. Scour the Fabric:

Duration: 1-2 Hours.

Raw cotton contains natural oils, waxes, and industrial sizing that block dye absorption. Fill a large stainless steel pot with water, add 1 tsp of soda ash and a splash of neutral detergent per pound of fabric. Simmer at 82°C (180°F) for 1 to 2 hours. Rinse thoroughly. Your fabric is now clean and ready to absorb treatment.

2. The Tannin Bath:

Duration: 2 Hours (or overnight).

Because cotton lacks protein, we must artificially add tannins to give the mordant something to bind to. Weigh out 10% Weight-of-Fabric (WOF) of a clear or high-tannin extract, or create a bath using your ground bark. Dissolve in hot water, submerge your damp, clean cotton, and stir continuously for the first 15 minutes. Simmer gently at 71°C (160°F) for 1 hour, then let it cool completely in the bath overnight.

3. The Alum Mordant Bath:

Duration: 1 Hour.

Wring out the fabric gently (do not rinse out the tannin). Prepare a separate pot of warm water. Dissolve 15% WOF Potassium Aluminum Sulfate (Alum) and 2% WOF Soda Ash (which acts as an assistant to help fix the alum to cellulose). Submerge the fabric, bring the temperature up to 82°C (180°F), and simmer for 1 hour while stirring occasionally to avoid uneven spotting.

4. Cool, Rinse, and Curing:

Duration: 30 Mins.

Allow the mordant bath to cool until it is safe to handle. Remove your cotton and rinse it thoroughly in warm water to clear away any unattached aluminum metallic salts from the surface. Your cotton is now chemically altered—it features a microscopic matrix of tannins and aluminum ions permanently bonded to the cellulose, ready to brilliantly pull the red and purple pigments out of your Mimosa dye pot.

Artisan Tip: Always use dedicated stainless steel or enamel pots for your dyeing and mordanting processes. Avoid aluminum pots for steps 1 and 2, as the metal of the pot can inadvertently react with your tannin bath and prematurely alter your colors.
